In 2018, Baker Mayfield was the first pick in the Draft and Josh Allen was the 7th overall pick. Three years later, both players have had inconsistent starts to their career, flashing moments of greatness but also having long stretches where they seemed incapable of consistently moving the chains (of course, Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen would love to be labeled inconsistent). In week 13 of the 2020 season, we saw some of the best versions of those two passers.

Allen picked up a first down on 54% of his 41 dropbacks while throwing for 4 touchdowns and 375 yards. He averaged 13.66 adjusted yards per dropback, the second best rate of any passer in week 13. Mayfield picked up a first down on 52% of his 33 dropbacks, the second-best rate of any passer in week 13. He threw for 334 yards and 4 touchdowns and averaged a league-high 14.58 adjusted yards per dropback. They were the top two passers of the week, with Allen edging Mayfield slightly due to greater volume.

Chargers rookie Justin Herbert has been outstanding this year, but his magnificent rookie campaign took a nosedive on Sunday. He threw over 50 passes and averaged under 4 yards per attempt, something that hadn’t happened in the NFL in six years.

This was another week that highlights just how important the passing battle is in the NFL. All but one team that won the passing battle won the game: and in that game, the Ravens outrushed the Cowboys 294 yards to 111, so we can happily assign rushing credit to that victory. There were big upsets in week 13, with the Steelers and Seahawks and their Hall of Fame quarterbacks losing to a pair of NFC East teams with less than stellar quarterback play. But even in those games, the better passing team won: it just so happened that the better passing attacks were from Washington and New York. Of course, it was the defense (rather then the quarterback play) of the Football Team and the Giants that led the way, but that’s half the battle.

Both Roethlisberger and Alex Smith had mediocre games, but a late interception from Roethlisberger proved to be the difference. Meanwhile, Russell Wilson and Colt McCoy both had bad stats, but Wilson struggled over a much longer period. He finished with the Seahawks lowest NY/A average of the season, and one of the lowest of any game during the Wilson era.

What stands out to you?
