Some quick data dumps today.

The first graph shows the percentage of 1-yard touchdowns that were rushing touchdowns or passing touchdowns in each year since 1950. As you can see, while the majority of all 1-yard scores are still rushing touchdowns, the ratio has changed considerably over the last 40 years.

1yd pass run

If we look at the same data for 2-yard touchdowns, the effect is even more striking. Whereas over 90% of touchdowns from the two-yard line used to be rushing scores, now the ratio is roughly 50/50:

2yd pass run

Similar trends emerge when we look at 3-, 4-, and 5-yard touchdowns:

3yd pass run 4yd pass run 5yd pass run

However, once we get to 10 or 20 yards from the end zone, the ratio has actually been pretty steady:

10yd pass run 20yd pass run

I’m short on time today, so I’ll leave the commentary to you guys.
