In this series, I will be looking at the history of coaches, quarterbacks, rushers, and receivers for all 32 franchises. For coaches and quarterbacks, I will be looking at how much their franchise’s career records (regular season only) would change if we removed the games with that person. For rushers and receivers, I will note how many times that player was the team’s leading rusher/receiver over the course of their time with that franchise (regular plus postseason).

The New York Giants have a long history of successful head coaches. Believe it or not, the Giants have a better winning percentage in games not coached by Tom Coughlin (0.537) than in games that Coughlin coached (0.531). Steve Owen, Jim Lee Howell, and Bill Parcells come out as the top three by this methodology, while former Dolphins DC Bill Arnsparger caused the biggest drop to the franchise’s winning percentage. The Giants have won 53.6% of their games, but that number jumps to 54.5% in games coached by anyone other than Arnsparger.

Eli Manning now has a career record of 116-114-1. That’s a 0.504 winning percentage, slightly worse than the franchise’s overall winning percentage (since 1950, which is how far quarterback starts data goes back) of 0.509. As a result, it’s the trio of Phil Simms (0.597), Charlie Conerly (0.646), and Y.A. Tittle (0.698) who stand out as the quarterbacks who have helped New York’s winning percentage (since 1950) the most. On the other side, Joe Pisarcik and Craig Morton caused the most harm to the Giants all-time winning percentage. Morton won two-thirds of his games as a starter outside of New York, but was a disaster for Big Blue.

Tiki Barber is a borderline Hall of Fame running back who continued to exceed expectations in New York. Had he been drafted 10 years later, he probably would have been one, but the Giants spent several of his prime years putting him in a time share with Ron Dayne. Barber’s versatile skill-set would have been even better suited for the modern game, but make no mistake: he was an outstanding running back for much of his career with the Giants.

The Giants have had a lot of great wide receivers — Del Shofner, Homer Jones, Frank Gifford, and, um, Odell Beckham come to mind — but it’s Amani Toomer who leads the franchise in this metric. Toomer did so 55 times with New York; meanwhile, OBJ led the Giants in receiving yards in 62% of his games! It’s a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison since Beckham only played with the Giants during his prime years, but he and Calvin Johnson are the only players to lead a team in receiving yards over 60% of the time while playing at least 60 games with that team.
