Joe Posnanski often writes about how aging can be so brutal to players careers, and how most fans just don't seem to realize how strong a factor it is.

Looks like Peyton Manning is only the 10th different QB (Moon, Testaverde and Favre each did it twice) to attempt 20+ passes in week 1 at age 39 or older.

Manning's performance rates 8th in AY/A and 7th in passer rating (out of all 13 qualifying games). http://pfref.com/tiny/lJEAJ

Warren Moon killed it at 41: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/199809060phi.htm
But he was worse than Manning at age 40: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/199708310sea.htm

I have no conclusions, other than Manning is already beating the odds by being an opening day starter at age 39.

And since we always have to compare Brady to Manning. Brady was 38 on opening day this year and he had the best age 38 opening performance ever. http://pfref.com/tiny/YKsps Manning was 38 last year and looked like "Manning" last year - almost as good as Brady's performance. So if this is the end for Manning, it shows just how quickly it can happen.

(Tiny one-game samples, of course.)
