I miss the days of Daryl Johnston and Tom Rathman, versatile guys who could block, run and catch; I think the article overstates the specialization of the fullback. One thing that recently crossed my mind on this topic was the possibility of bringing back the T formation with a halfback who is capable of blocking and a fullback capable of running, with both players as potential receivers. The idea would be that the defense wouldn't know who was going to block for whom on a running play. Keeping the D guessing will always be important for any football offense. I get what the author is saying with the graph about the D linemen getting so much bigger, but a 6'2" 245 lbs athletic fullback (same height, but a bit heavier than DJ and TR ) would be able to multi-task like the FBs of the 90's. I mean, when the author says "A fast fullback becomes a running back, a tall fullback becomes a tight end, and a strong fullback puts on weight to become a linebacker", what about the guy that can do all three? The great thing about football is the wide variety of different things that can happen: pass, run, punt, kick, trick plays, etc. The loss of the multi-task FB diminishes that variety. As far as young players not being attracted to the position goes, the NFL has been asking players to switch positions as long as I can remember.
