Isn´t Expected Points (EPA) also based on field position? At least on Burke´s model? ... Otherwise great post ofc.

In reply to <a href="http://www.footballperspective.com/the-new-patriots-dynasty-and-its-core-four/#comment-331473">Four Touchdowns</a>.

One of the reasons why the Patriots' defense gives up fewer points than yards is because they get fantastic field position. The New England defense was best in the league this year in average starting field position, and they've been at least top 8 in 14 of the last 15 seasons. Two key reasons for this, I think, are that the Patriots get consistently strong special teams play, and the offense produces so few turnovers.

I think the great field position is a major reason why New England's defense typically does better in points metrics than it does in things like Expected Points and DVOA. And this year's team has taken it to a whole new level, finishing 5th in points allowed, despite being 29th in yards allowed, 27th in Expected Points, and 31st in DVOA.
