The Dolphins are the rare franchise that has just four players with more than 40 touchdown passes: Marino (420), Griese (192), <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/T/TannRy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-" onclick="sr_record_analytics_event('newsfeed_click','', sr_record_directory(),'sr_tracker');">Ryan Tannehill</a> (123), and <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/F/FiedJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-" onclick="sr_record_analytics_event('newsfeed_click','', sr_record_directory(),'sr_tracker');">Jay Fiedler</a> (66). But perhaps here is the most startling stat: Ryan Tannehill has the best passer rating in Dolphins history! </p>
<p>Yes, Tannehill &#8212; he of the <a href="http://www.footballperspective.com/after-6-breakout-seasons-the-ryan-tannehill-era-in-miami-is-over/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back</a> breakout seasons &#8212; has a better passer rating than both Marino and Griese, although of course that&#8217;s not true when you adjust for era. Marino ended his career with an 86.4 passer rating, and a <a href="http://www.footballperspective.com/adjusting-passer-rating-for-era-updated-2017-career-ratings/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">76.9 passer rating</a> when adjusted for era. Griese had a 77.1 actual passer rating, and a <a href="http://www.footballperspective.com/adjusting-passer-rating-for-era-updated-2017-career-ratings/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">79.0 passer rating</a> when adjusted for era (Griese also took a ton of sacks, while Marino took very few, which is the only reason Greise&#8217;s era-adjusted rating comes in ahead of Marino&#8217;s). Tannehill, through 2017, had a <a href="http://www.footballperspective.com/adjusting-passer-rating-for-era-updated-2017-career-ratings/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">65.1 era-adjusted passer rating</a>, and in 2018, had a <a href="http://www.footballperspective.com/2018-era-adjusted-passer-ratings/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">66.4 EA PR</a>, but his career un-adjusted passer rating is 87.0.</p>
<p>So while we know passer rating is silly to use when not adjusting for era, as a matter of trivia, it&#8217;s pretty interesting to see Tannehill ahead of Marino. But ANY/A &#8212; which includes sacks &#8212; is a better way to measure passing efficiency. And so today, I thought it might be interesting to look at the history of the Miami Dolphins passing offense and passing defenses, based on trailing 16 game averages.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s shown in this graph below. The orange line shows the trailing 16-game Adjusted Net Yards per Attempt average of the Dolphins offense going back to 1966. You can see the Marino-induced spike in &#8217;84 and &#8217;85, as more games from his historic 1984 season is captured by the trailing average. The aqua line shows the trailing 16-game ANY/A allowed by the Dolphins defense: the valleys shown in &#8217;73/&#8217;74 and early 1983 are good representations of the Super Bowl defenses that carried the Dolphins in 1972, 1973, and 1982 (of course, the &#8217;72 and &#8217;73 offenses were good, too).<span id="more-41636"></span></p>
<a href="http://www.footballperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/miami-pass-o.png"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-41637" src="http://www.footballperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/miami-pass-o-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="http://www.footballperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/miami-pass-o-1024x576.png 1024w, http://www.footballperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/miami-pass-o-300x169.png 300w, http://www.footballperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/miami-pass-o-768x432.png 768w, http://www.footballperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/miami-pass-o.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a>
<p>And here&#8217;s the same data, but showing simply the net ANY/A: i.e., the offensive ANY/A minus the defensive ANY/A for each trailing 16 game period. The Dolphins were above average for most of the first 30 years following the merger, but since the 2002 realignment, the Dolphins have spent more time underwater:<br />
<a href="http://www.footballperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/miami-net-pass.png"><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-41639" src="http://www.footballperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/miami-net-pass-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="http://www.footballperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/miami-net-pass-1024x576.png 1024w, http://www.footballperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/miami-net-pass-300x169.png 300w, http://www.footballperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/miami-net-pass-768x432.png 768w, http://www.footballperspective.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/miami-net-pass.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></p>
<p>Finally, I calculated how often the Dolphins &#8220;won&#8221; the ANY/A battle in all games (including playoff games) started by each quarterback (min: 10 starts). For example, under Marino, the Dolphins had the better ANY/A in a game 161 times, a worse ANY/A 96 times, and the same ANY/A one time. That translates to a 0.626 winning percentage, and under Marino, Miami &#8220;won&#8221; the ANY/A battle 65 more times than they lost. </p>

<p>Under Tannehill, Miami had the better ANY/A only 40 out of 88 games.</p>
<p>And you may notice that Morrall has a pretty sparkling 12-2 mark here. In 1972, the Dolphins won the ANY/A battle in 16 of 17 games: Miami lost the ANY/A battle against Morrall&#8217;s former team, but the Dolphins still won <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/197210290clt.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">23-0</a> thanks to a dominant ground game that day.</p>

<p>Okay, snark aside, the Tannehill breakout season never actually happened, despite the predictions of sports journalists everywhere. After a nondescript rookie season in 2012, the breakout didn&#8217;t happen in his <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2013/02/11/2013-nfl-breakout-players/1907365/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">sophomore</a> season in <a href="https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/3/26/4136852/nfl-2013-breakout-candidates-ryan-tannehill-chandler-jones" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2013</a>. That prompted me to ask the question: How long does it take <a href="http://www.footballperspective.com/how-long-does-it-take-great-quarterbacks-to-break-out/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">great quarterbacks to break out</a>?</p>
<p>Tannehill began his career with two consecutive seasons of below-average ANY/A, and while some excused his poor numbers due to bad coaching and offensive line play, I wrote that if &#8220;Tannehill turns into a star quarterback, he’ll be a very unique case.&#8221; That line remains true.</p>
<p>Many expected him to break out in his <a href="https://phinphanatic.com/2014/04/14/ryan-tannehill-primed-breakout-season/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">third year</a> in <a href="http://www.espn.com/nfl/insider/story/_/id/11379028/ryan-tannehill-ranks-top-50-breakout-players-2014-nfl" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2014</a>, but that didn&#8217;t happen, either. At that point, I wondered <a href="http://www.footballperspective.com/comparables-to-ryan-tannehill/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">whether Tannehill was ever going to break out</a>, and noted that if a quarterback begins his career with three straight years of below-average play, that&#8217;s probably bad sign.</p>
<p>Then, prior to his fourth season in 2015, Jon Gruden said the <a href="https://www.thephinsider.com/2015/8/7/9115463/jon-gruden-ryan-tannehill-breakout-season" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">breakout season was coming</a>, and so did&#8230; <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2015/09/09/ryan-tannehill-believes-hes-poised-for-breakout-season/71955306/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tannehill himself</a>.  It did not happen, and blame wound up being <a href="http://www.footballperspective.com/joe-philbin-ryan-tannehill-and-non-winning-seasons/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">placed on the head coach</a>.  </p>
<p>After four seasons, I <a href="http://www.footballperspective.com/where-does-ryan-tannehill-rank-in-the-pantheon-of-great-qbs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">asked the satirical question</a>: Where Does Ryan Tannehill rank in the Pantheon of Great QBs? At the time, there had been 88 quarterbacks since 1970 who had taken at least 90% of the same team’s pass attempts in every year in any four-year window. Of those passers, Tannehill had the second worst passing stats of any quarterback and was one of just three that failed to start a single playoff game. So, <em>clearly</em>, Tannehill had to be great to be getting all of these snaps despite both a below-average record and below-average statistics.<span id="more-41644"></span></p>
<p>At this point, entering his fifth season in 2016, obviously nobody was exp&#8230;. well, actually, yes <a href="https://www.theringer.com/2016/9/8/16043806/no-really-this-might-be-ryan-tannehills-year-1eaab5304ab4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">people thought</a> that 2016 <a href="http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000671183/article/ryan-tannehill-poised-for-2016-breakout-for-dolphins" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">might really</a> be his <a href="https://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/nfl-quarterbacks-break-out-in-2016-blake-bortles-derek-carr-marcus-mariota-062916" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">breakout year</a>, in part due to the arrival of <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/GaseAd0.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Adam Gase</a>. As it turned out, Tannehill in 2016 was&#8230; well, it&#8217;s a little complicated. He got injured in December 2016. At the time, he was below the league average in ANY/A for the 5th time in his 5-year career, which <a href="https://twitter.com/fbgchase/status/808301289000071168" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">I tweeted the day of his injury</a>. Tannehill averaged 6.3 ANY/A through 14 weeks, while the <a href="https://twitter.com/fbgchase/status/808301461188780032" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">NFL average was 6.4</a>. But as is often the case, the NFL average dropped during the final month of the season, and the final 2016 ANY/A average for the NFL was 6.2. Therefore, on a technicality, Tannehill finished the 2016 season as an above-average passer, which is certainly the most Ryan Tannehill way to possibly do so. And while Tannehill was injured, his backup <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MoorMa01.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Matt Moore</a> posted <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/mia/2016.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">better passing numbers</a> than him.</p>
<p>In 2017, Tannehill missed the entire year with a <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/2017/08/03/ryan-tannehill-leg-injury-dolphins-practice-update" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">knee injury suffered in training camp</a>, although not before the <a href="https://dolphinswire.usatoday.com/2017/07/20/nfl-networks-elliot-harrison-predicts-dolphins-will-have-top-10-offense-can-they/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">breakout</a> season <a href="https://phinphanatic.com/2017/05/27/miami-dolphins-offense-will-shine-2017/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">predictions</a> were <a href="http://www.nfl.com/videos/good-morning-football/0ap3000000824364/AFC-East-players-poised-for-breakout-2017-seasons-Ryan-Tannehill" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">re-emerging</a>.  Miami responded by bringing <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"  href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/C/CutlJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-" onclick="sr_record_analytics_event('newsfeed_click','', sr_record_directory(),'sr_tracker');">Jay  Cutler</a> out of retirement, and that went about as well as you would have expected.</p>
<p>I stopped writing about Tannehill at this point, but that doesn&#8217;t mean a <a href="https://dynastyfootballfactory.com/ryan-tannehill-2018-breakout/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tannehill breakout season</a> wasn&#8217;t being <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/football/news/2018-outlook-ryan-tannehill/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">discussed</a> for the sixth year in a row in the <a href="http://dailydolphin.blog.palmbeachpost.com/2018/06/02/two-weeks-into-otas-dolphins-qb-ryan-tannehill-looks-dangerous/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">summer of 2018</a>.  It did not happen.</p>
<p>There were some really high highs: Tannehill is the only quarterback to record <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/pgl_finder.cgi?request=1&amp;match=career&amp;year_min=2015&amp;year_max=2018&amp;season_start=1&amp;season_end=-1&amp;pos%5B%5D=QB&amp;pos%5B%5D=WR&amp;pos%5B%5D=RB&amp;pos%5B%5D=TE&amp;pos%5B%5D=OL&amp;pos%5B%5D=DL&amp;pos%5B%5D=LB&amp;pos%5B%5D=DB&amp;is_starter=E&amp;game_type=R&amp;career_game_num_min=1&amp;career_game_num_max=400&amp;qb_start_num_min=1&amp;qb_start_num_max=400&amp;game_num_min=0&amp;game_num_max=99&amp;week_num_min=0&amp;week_num_max=99&amp;c1stat=pass_adj_yds_per_att&amp;c1comp=gt&amp;c1val=15&amp;c2stat=pass_att&amp;c2comp=gt&amp;c2val=10&amp;c5val=1.0&amp;order_by=pass_td" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">three games of 15.0+ AY/A since 2015</a>, and that&#8217;s even with him missing a year. He went 18/19 for 282 yards and 4 TDs against the 2015 Texans, 17 of 23 for 289 yards and 3 TDs against the 2018 Raiders, and 14/19 for 265 yards and 3 TDs against the 2018 Patriots, three remarkable passing lines (although all of those games had some long touchdowns that didn&#8217;t have much to do with the quarterback). Of course, the lows could get <a href="http://www.footballperspective.com/ryan-tannehill-had-one-of-the-worst-passing-games-ever/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">really low</a>, too, including his <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/201812300buf.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">final game with Miami</a>. I am going to guess that Tannehill will be happy to never take <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/pgl_finder.cgi?request=1&#038;match=combined&#038;year_min=2012&#038;year_max=2018&#038;season_start=1&#038;season_end=-1&#038;pos%5B%5D=QB&#038;pos%5B%5D=WR&#038;pos%5B%5D=RB&#038;pos%5B%5D=TE&#038;pos%5B%5D=OL&#038;pos%5B%5D=DL&#038;pos%5B%5D=LB&#038;pos%5B%5D=DB&#038;is_starter=E&#038;game_type=R&#038;career_game_num_min=1&#038;career_game_num_max=400&#038;qb_start_num_min=1&#038;qb_start_num_max=400&#038;game_num_min=0&#038;game_num_max=99&#038;week_num_min=0&#038;week_num_max=99&#038;stadium_id=BUF00&#038;c1stat=pass_att&#038;c1comp=gt&#038;c1val=75&#038;c5val=1.0&#038;order_by=pass_adj_yds_per_att" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">another snap on the field in Buffalo</a>.</p>
<p>But the overall theme was mediocre, in large part due to Tannehill&#8217;s issue with taking sacks. If you look at the 32 quarterbacks with the most pass attempts since 2012, Tannehill has the 4th-worst sack rate at 7.5%. The only quarterbacks sacked more often were a pair of run-heavy quarterbacks in <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/K/KaepCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-" onclick="sr_record_analytics_event('newsfeed_click','', sr_record_directory(),'sr_tracker');">Colin Kaepernick</a> and <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/W/WilsRu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-" onclick="sr_record_analytics_event('newsfeed_click','', sr_record_directory(),'sr_tracker');">Russell Wilson</a> (who take a lot of sacks on scrambles), and a bad quarterback in <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/McCoJo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-" onclick="sr_record_analytics_event('newsfeed_click','', sr_record_directory(),'sr_tracker');">Josh McCown</a>. Despite playing like a risk-averse quarterback, he ranked in the bottom 12 in both yards per completion and also interception rate, a pretty bad combination: the only other quarterbacks to do so in this sample were Jay Cutler, <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BortBl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-" onclick="sr_record_analytics_event('newsfeed_click','', sr_record_directory(),'sr_tracker');">Blake Bortles</a>, and <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MannEl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-" onclick="sr_record_analytics_event('newsfeed_click','', sr_record_directory(),'sr_tracker');">Eli Manning</a>.</p>
<p>Tannehill was never really <em>awful</em>, which is how he lasted so long in Miami.   Just getting to 2,500 pass attempts is a sign of some level of quality &#8212; Tannehill is certainly better than the worst starter in the league &#8212; but his run with Miami lasted far too long.  Of the 100 players with the most pass attempts since 1970, Tannehill is one of <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/psl_finder.cgi?request=1&#038;match=combined&#038;year_min=1970&#038;year_max=2018&#038;season_start=1&#038;season_end=-1&#038;pos%5B%5D=qb&#038;pos%5B%5D=rb&#038;pos%5B%5D=wr&#038;pos%5B%5D=te&#038;pos%5B%5D=e&#038;pos%5B%5D=t&#038;pos%5B%5D=g&#038;pos%5B%5D=c&#038;pos%5B%5D=ol&#038;pos%5B%5D=dt&#038;pos%5B%5D=de&#038;pos%5B%5D=dl&#038;pos%5B%5D=ilb&#038;pos%5B%5D=olb&#038;pos%5B%5D=lb&#038;pos%5B%5D=cb&#038;pos%5B%5D=s&#038;pos%5B%5D=db&#038;pos%5B%5D=k&#038;pos%5B%5D=p&#038;draft_year_min=1936&#038;draft_year_max=2018&#038;draft_slot_min=1&#038;draft_slot_max=500&#038;draft_pick_in_round=pick_overall&#038;conference=any&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=qb&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=rb&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=wr&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=te&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=e&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=t&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=g&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=c&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=ol&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=dt&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=de&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=dl&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=ilb&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=olb&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=lb&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=cb&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=s&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=db&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=k&#038;draft_pos%5B%5D=p&#038;c1stat=pass_att&#038;c1comp=gt&#038;c1val=2560&#038;c5val=1.0&#038;order_by=pass_adj_net_yds_per_att_index&#038;order_by_asc=Y" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">just seven</a> with a passing index (ANY/A+) of 94 or lower: he is survived by <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"  href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/D/DilfTr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-" onclick="sr_record_analytics_event('newsfeed_click','', sr_record_directory(),'sr_tracker');">Trent  Dilfer</a>, <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"  href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BortBl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-" onclick="sr_record_analytics_event('newsfeed_click','', sr_record_directory(),'sr_tracker');">Blake  Bortles</a>, <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"  href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/C/CassMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-" onclick="sr_record_analytics_event('newsfeed_click','', sr_record_directory(),'sr_tracker');">Matt  Cassel</a>, <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"  href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/McCoJo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-" onclick="sr_record_analytics_event('newsfeed_click','', sr_record_directory(),'sr_tracker');">Josh  McCown</a>, <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"  href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/P/PastDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-" onclick="sr_record_analytics_event('newsfeed_click','', sr_record_directory(),'sr_tracker');">Dan  Pastorini</a>, and <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"  href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BradSa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-" onclick="sr_record_analytics_event('newsfeed_click','', sr_record_directory(),'sr_tracker');">Sam  Bradford</a>.</p>
