Being a Jets fan since the early 80s, and living in Florida much of the time, I never thought I would say this, but that 84 season for Marino, Clayton and Duper was really something else. And Marino didnt need to have his own footballs to throw and the receivers back then didnt have those tacky gloves to wear to help them catch the football. As time goes on, I really gain more and more respect for the 3 of them.

Always enjoy these spotlights on players which don't receive much recognition today. Gene Washington would have thrived under today's more relaxed passing environment. Had the speed, body control, and toughness to make virtually any catch required. The 1970-72 49ers were a very talented group, but just couldn't solve Dallas in the playoffs. Like many receivers who played the bulk of their careers before 1978, Washington had to deal with far more physical contact once the ball was snapped. And once a play ended, receivers would sometimes get hit again. It was likely a combination of that wear and tear, along with less advanced training methods, which resulted in shorter careers for the WR position.
