I read over some numbers the other day (at http://airyards.com/gamespeed.html) that made the whole question of Landry: talent vs production, make a lot more sense. Other players seem to think he's really great; we all see the type of crazy catches he can make, and at PFF he always puts up tons of forced-missed tackles -- but his numbers never live up. People suggest that maybe it's just the assignments he's asked to run that are non-starters for valuable production. If you search Landry at the above link you can see that almost all of his catches (/plays with ball in his hands) had him moving at below average speeds (among WR) at EVERY measure of distance ran on the field. For 2 of his 4 years (2015 & 2017) his YAC was below average at each distance down the field (per http://airyards.com/profiler.html) ie: it was inflated by seeing more passes at distances where YAC comes more easily. Speed isn't everything for skill players, but when your speed is below average at every stage of a play, your contributions are going to be limited (in terms of actual value - as opposed to "failed" receptions).

When I watch Landry, he seems like a gamer who makes tough plays. But so many of the statistics point to him not being all that helpful. I also think the Dolphins have asked him to catch a lot of screen passes that go for nothing. Not sure if that is bad play designs, or bad execution.

I liked watching Landry play, and would have liked if they could have kept him around at a decent price. But it sounded like he wanted the money of a top-10 receiver, and he doesn't seem to play at that level.
