Actually, all the old two-way ends -- the position that became wide receiver -- played DE on defense. Pete Pihos, a contemporary of Fears, is in the HOF as a receiver, but he was an all-pro defensive end. So no: surprisingly, it was once common. But they weren&#039;t really defensive linemen as we think of the position today.]]></description>
