I was going to fiddle with the list some just to see how players ranked when you divided out the list by era, perhaps not in the way Jack exactly did so. But in disagreement to his post, numbers are not “worthless.” And they are only misleading if you misinterpret them. I have maintained that “the stats” can be an indicator of how a player performs under certain conditions– his team, the era he competed in, and competition. Chase’s metric apparently does that- Don Hutson and Lance Alworth are in the top 3 in eras with considerable less passing than the current one. But I heartily agree that the eyeball test is important. They provide the qualitative aspect of how good a player is. Numbers say more about career success and perhaps less about how “good” a player is in talent and the expression of said talent.
