I had heard of Carmichael before but was surprised to learn that he had been the OC for the Saints since 2009. He has had a long affinity with Brees as he has been with him in some capacity every season from the beginning of Brees' career with the Chargers.

While Payton has called the Plays for the majority of his time as Head Coach of the Saints, Carmichael as recently as 2016 was calling the Plays for much of that season.

Re the "left after 2 years" comment: "Returning to the same team is the norm, but if you are still on the same
team two years later, you may not be head coaching material. None of
these six left to become head coaches in the NFL:

Gregg Williams"

Of course, Williams already had his HC shot with Buffalo. His lack of success there maybe proves the point, but he had a shot. That combined with Bountygate pretty much guaranteed no 2nd chance.
