The Bengals thought they were set at QB in 1969 with the great rookie, Greg Cook. But Cook suffered a shoulder injury that season, and was never the same. Carter had nowhere near the arm strength of Cook, so Walsh adapted the vertical passing concepts he learned to maximize Carter’s abilities.
